Consequently, the majority of us naturally find ourselves striving to fit in with these people, especially during the tough transition from childhood to adulthood. It is this part of the human condition that makes us feel as though we must forge ties with something outside of ourselves in order to establish a strong sense of existence and a clear understanding of who we are. In 2008 and 2009, she was also chosen as one of the ‘25 Most Influential Gay and Lesbian Australians’ by â€Å"Same Same†, an Australian online gay and lesbian community. This indicates that true existence can only be found when our decisions and actions are truly our own; when we stand alone and free of connections, without social influence. Considering a different perspective, it can be argued that both sides of the argument are true to a certain extent, in that we are able to possess a sense of existence whilst devoid of most connections, but there are some affiliations such as the bonds we share with our family that we cannot live without. A sense of acceptance from our familial ties and intimate relationships with others shape who we are. These connections ideally provide love, protection, security and the opportunity to discover our values, attitudes, and beliefs that help to define us from the time of our birth.
